Coir Doormats: What Coir Is, How Long It Lasts, and How to Clean One
4 min read
What a coir doormat is made of, why coconut fiber scrapes shoes clean, how long it lasts outdoors, and simple ways to clean and refresh it.
Coir is the fiber from the outer husk of a coconut. It's stiff, coarse, and naturally rot-resistant — the qualities that make it the classic material for a front-door mat.
Why coir works at the door
Each coir bristle is short and rigid, so it scrapes dirt, grit, and snow from shoe soles instead of just absorbing them. The dirt falls between the fibers rather than tracking inside. Coir also dries reasonably fast and tolerates sun better than most natural fibers.
Where coir belongs
Coir is best on a covered porch or under an overhang. It handles rain, but a mat that sits soaked for days will break down faster and can mildew. In exposed spots, look for a coir mat with a rubber or PVC backing — the backing keeps it from sliding and lifts the fiber off a wet surface.
Inside, coir is too rough for bare feet; pair it with a softer washable mat just inside the door.
How long a coir doormat lasts
With covered placement and normal traffic, expect a good coir mat to last roughly one to two years before it sheds noticeably and the bristles flatten. Shedding is normal when new — shake it out for the first couple of weeks.
How to clean a coir doormat
- Shake or beat it outside weekly to release trapped grit.
- Vacuum both sides occasionally with a strong suction setting.
- Spot clean with a stiff brush and a little mild soapy water; rinse lightly.
- Dry fully in the sun, standing on its edge, before putting it back.
Avoid pressure washing — it loosens the fibers from the backing.
Choosing the size
A doormat should cover most of the door's width — about 80% is a good rule. See our standard doormat size guide for measurements.

Frequently asked questions
Are coir doormats good in rain?
They tolerate rain, but they last longest where they can dry out between storms.
Why is my new coir mat shedding?
Loose fibers from manufacturing work free in the first weeks. Shake it out; it settles.
