How to Clean a Chandelier (Including Crystal Chandeliers)

5 min read

How to clean a chandelier safely: power-off prep, dusting vs deep cleaning, how to clean a crystal chandelier, and what to avoid on metal finishes.

A clean chandelier throws noticeably more light. Dust dulls glass and crystal fast, especially in kitchens and dining rooms. Here's how to clean one without damaging it, or yourself.

Before you start

  1. Turn the power off at the wall switch, and at the breaker if you'll be touching sockets or wiring. Let the bulbs cool completely.
  2. Set up a stable ladder. Never stand on a chair or the dining table.
  3. Lay a thick towel or blanket underneath to catch anything that slips.
  4. Photograph the chandelier from a few angles if you plan to remove crystals, so you can rehang them correctly.

Light dusting (every month or two)

Use a microfiber cloth or a soft feather duster and work from the top down. A pair of cotton gloves helps: dampen one, keep one dry, and wipe each arm and crystal between your fingers. Remove bulbs and wipe them with a dry cloth.

Deep cleaning (once or twice a year)

Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, or a 1:3 solution of white vinegar and distilled water for glass. Distilled water prevents mineral spots.

  • Glass shades and removable parts: take them down, wash in a plastic tub lined with a towel, rinse, and air dry.
  • Fixed parts: wipe with a damp, well-wrung cloth. Never spray liquid directly onto the fixture, where it can run into sockets.

How to clean a crystal chandelier

Crystal is where cleaning pays off most. Remove crystals a few at a time and wash them in the warm soapy water, rinse in distilled water, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Wear cotton gloves when rehanging to avoid fingerprints. For crystals that don't come off, wipe each one with a damp glove, then a dry one.

Avoid ammonia-heavy cleaners on crystal with metal clips; they can tarnish the metal.

Caring for metal finishes

  • Brass and bronze: dust and wipe with a barely damp cloth. Skip abrasive polish on lacquered or living finishes; it strips the coating or patina.
  • Painted and powder-coated metal: mild soap and water only.
  • Wood or fabric shades: dust or vacuum with a brush attachment; never soak.

Finishing up

Make sure every part is completely dry before reinstalling bulbs and turning the power back on.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean a chandelier?

Dust every month or two; deep clean once or twice a year, more often over a kitchen island.

Can I use a commercial chandelier cleaner spray?

Drip-dry sprays exist, but they still need the power off, and they can drip onto sockets. A damp-cloth clean is safer.

How do I clean a chandelier on a high ceiling?

For very high ceilings, a professional with proper scaffolding is the safest choice.
