How to Wash Bath Mats (Cotton, Memory Foam, and Rubber-Backed)
4 min read
How to wash bath mats the right way: machine settings by mat type, how often to wash, drying without ruining the backing, and when to replace.
A bath mat lives on a damp floor and absorbs water several times a day, so it needs washing more often than most textiles in your home. The method depends on what it's made of — and especially on its backing.
How often to wash bath mats
Once a week is a good rhythm for a busy bathroom; every two weeks is fine for a guest bath. Wash sooner if the mat smells musty or stays damp between uses. Having two mats and rotating them makes weekly washing painless.
How to wash cotton and microfiber bath mats
- Shake the mat outside or vacuum it to remove hair and grit.
- Machine wash in warm water on a normal cycle with regular detergent. Wash with towels or on their own — not with delicate clothing, since lint transfers.
- Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibers and makes the mat less absorbent.
- Tumble dry on low, or line dry fully before putting it back on the floor.
How to wash memory foam bath mats
Memory foam is comfortable but holds water. Check the care label first; many are machine washable on a gentle, cold cycle. Use a small amount of mild detergent, then air dry flat — never on high heat, which can break down the foam. Make sure the core is completely dry, or it will start to smell.
How to wash bath mats with rubber backing
Rubber and latex backings are what keep a mat from sliding, and heat is what destroys them. Wash on a cold, gentle cycle and never put a rubber-backed mat in a hot dryer — the backing cracks, crumbles, and sheds. Hang it or lay it flat to dry. Once the backing starts flaking, it no longer grips reliably and it's time to replace the mat.
Between washes
Hang the mat over the tub edge or a towel bar after showers so it dries instead of sitting wet on the floor. Good airflow is the simplest way to prevent mildew.
When to replace a bath mat
Replace it when the backing peels or crumbles, when it no longer lies flat, or when a musty smell survives a wash. For most mats that's somewhere between one and two years of regular use.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wash bath mats with towels?
Yes, if they're cotton or microfiber and the colors are similar. Keep rubber-backed mats out of hot loads.
How do I get mildew out of a bath mat?
Add a cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle, then dry the mat completely. If dark spots remain, the mildew has set in and replacing the mat is the safer choice.
Can I bleach a bath mat?
Only white cotton mats, and only if the care label allows it. Bleach weakens rubber backings and fades colors.
