End Table Height Guide: Sizing Beside a Sofa
5 min read

How tall an end table should be next to a sofa or chair, how big to go, and how far to place it. A practical side table sizing guide with numbers in inches.
An end table should sit roughly level with the arm of the sofa or chair beside it — within about two inches, above or below. For most sofas that means a table between 20 and 26 inches tall. Match the height to the arm first, then size the top to what it needs to hold, then place it close enough to reach without leaning.
Here is how to get each of those numbers right.
Start with the arm height
An end table exists so you can set down a drink, a book, or a remote without getting up. That works when the surface is about where your hand already rests: the top of the sofa or chair arm.
- Aim for a tabletop within 2 inches of the arm height. Slightly lower is comfortable; much higher feels awkward and blocks the view across the room.
- Measure the arm, not the seat. Seat height is usually 17 to 19 inches, but arms range from about 20 to 28 inches depending on the style.
- Armless seating? Match the table to the seat height plus a few inches, so the surface is easy to reach from a sitting position.
| Seating style | Typical arm height | Target end table height |
|---|---|---|
| Low-profile or modern sofa | 20–23 in. | 18–23 in. |
| Standard sofa or loveseat | 23–26 in. | 21–26 in. |
| Rolled-arm or traditional sofa | 25–28 in. | 23–28 in. |
| Accent or club chair | 22–26 in. | 20–26 in. |
| Armless chair or bench | — | 20–24 in. (seat height + 3–6 in.) |
If your sofa and a chair have different arm heights and share one table between them, split the difference and favour the seat people use most.
How big the tabletop should be
Size the top to its job and to the seat beside it.
- Width or diameter: 18 to 24 inches suits most spots. It should hold a lamp and a drink if it's the only surface at that end of the sofa.
- Depth: keep it no deeper than the sofa itself — usually under 30 inches — so the table doesn't stick out past the front of the seat.
- Proportion: a large sectional can carry a wider or heavier table; a slim-armed sofa or a small room looks better with a narrow or round one.
A round top is forgiving in tight spaces and walkways because there are no corners to catch. A square or rectangular top gives more usable surface and lines up neatly against a sofa arm.
Placement: close enough to reach
- Set the table 2 to 6 inches from the sofa arm. Any further and you'll lean to reach it.
- Line up the front edge roughly with the front of the arm, or slightly behind it, so it doesn't jut into the walkway.
- Keep 30 to 36 inches of walkway around the seating area where people pass.
If the sofa sits against a wall with a window beside it, check that the table and anything on it clear the window sill and curtains.
Pairing an end table with a lamp
Most end tables carry a lamp, so size them together. The goal is a shade whose bottom edge lands around eye level when you're sitting — roughly 38 to 42 inches from the floor for most sofas.
- A taller table (25–28 inches) pairs with a shorter lamp.
- A lower table (18–22 inches) needs a taller lamp to bring the light up to reading height.
- The lamp base shouldn't take up more than about a third of the tabletop, so there's still room for a cup.

One table or two?
- A matched pair at both ends of a sofa is balanced and practical when several people sit there.
- One end table plus a floor lamp on the other side works well in a small room or beside a sofa against a corner.
- Two different tables can look collected — keep them close in height so the room's lines stay level.
If space is tight, a C-shaped table that slides under the sofa, or a small drum table, gives you a surface without taking up a full footprint. The short version
Match the end table to the arm of the seat beside it, within two inches — usually 20 to 26 inches tall. Choose an 18- to 24-inch top that holds a lamp and a drink, keep it shallower than the sofa, and place it 2 to 6 inches from the arm. Size the lamp and the table together so the shade's bottom edge sits near eye level when you're seated.

Frequently asked questions
How tall should an end table be?
About level with the arm of the sofa or chair beside it, within two inches. For most sofas that's 20 to 26 inches — but measure your own sofa arm, since styles vary.
Should an end table be higher or lower than the sofa arm?
Level is ideal. If you can't match it exactly, slightly lower is more comfortable than higher.
How far should an end table be from the sofa?
Two to six inches from the arm, with its front edge roughly in line with the front of the arm.
What size end table do I need?
An 18- to 24-inch top suits most spots. Make sure it can hold a lamp and a drink if it's the only surface at that end of the sofa, and keep its depth shallower than the sofa.
Do end tables have to match?
No. Two different tables can work well as long as they're close in height, so lamps and sightlines stay level.
What height end table goes with an armless chair?
Aim for the seat height plus three to six inches — usually 20 to 24 inches.
