Throw Blanket Size Guide: Sofa, Bed & Chair

4 min read

Terrace sofa and armchair layered with linen throws and cushions

Standard throw blanket sizes, which size suits a sofa, bed or armchair, how to drape one so it looks intentional, and which fabrics to choose.

The standard throw blanket is about 50 by 60 inches. That covers one adult on a sofa and drapes neatly over an arm or across the foot of a bed. Choose a larger throw, around 60 by 80 inches, if two people share it, if you're tall, or if it has to span a king bed. Beyond size, the fabric decides how warm it feels and how easy it is to live with.

Here is how to choose.

Common throw sizes

Size Roughly Best for
Small / lap 40 x 50 in. a reading chair, a child, a lap in the car
Standard throw 50 x 60 in. one person on a sofa; draping over an arm or chair back
Large throw 50 x 70 in. to 60 x 70 in. taller people; a sofa you share
Oversized 60 x 80 in. two people; across the foot of a queen or king bed

Sizes vary by a few inches between makers, so check the listed dimensions, not just the name.

On a sofa

A standard 50 x 60-inch throw is the right scale for most sofas. Drape it over one arm, fold it in thirds over the back, or leave it loosely over a corner seat. On a large sectional, a 60 x 70-inch or oversized throw stays in proportion. One or two throws per sofa is plenty; more starts to look like laundry.

On a bed

A throw across the foot of the bed adds color and a quick extra layer. Fold it lengthwise so it covers roughly the bottom third of the bed.

  • Twin or full: a standard 50 x 60-inch throw spans the width.
  • Queen (60 in. wide): a standard throw folded across the foot works, and a 60 x 80-inch one hangs a little over each side.
  • King (76 in. wide): choose an oversized throw so it doesn't look undersized.

On a chair

For an armchair or reading chair, a standard or lap-size throw folded over the back or one arm is enough. It keeps the chair looking inviting without swallowing it.

Choosing a fabric

  • Cotton is breathable, usually machine-washable, and works year-round.
  • Wool is the warmest for its weight and naturally resists odors. It is usually a dry-clean or gentle-wash fabric, so check the label.
  • Faux fur and sherpa are plush and cozy, best for cold months and a layered look.
  • Chunky knits add strong texture but can snag on pets' claws.

The short version

A standard throw is about 50 x 60 inches: right for one person on a sofa, over a chair, or across the foot of a twin, full or queen bed. Go up to 60 x 80 inches for two people, tall people or a king bed. Choose cotton for year-round use, wool for warmth, and faux fur or sherpa for a plush winter layer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a throw blanket?

About 50 by 60 inches. That covers one adult on a sofa and drapes neatly over an arm or across the foot of a bed.

What size throw is best for a couch?

A 50 x 60-inch throw suits most sofas. For a large sectional, or if two people share it, go up to 60 x 70 or 60 x 80 inches.

What size throw goes at the end of a queen bed?

A standard 50 x 60-inch throw folded across the foot works on a queen; a 60 x 80-inch one hangs slightly over each side for a fuller look.

Is a throw blanket big enough to sleep under?

A standard throw covers one person on a sofa but is small for a bed. Choose an oversized throw, or a blanket sized for your mattress, if you want to sleep under it.

What is the warmest throw blanket material?

Wool is the warmest for its weight, followed by faux fur and sherpa. Cotton is lighter and better for warm months.

How many throws should be on a sofa?

One or two. More than that tends to look cluttered rather than cozy.
