What Size Wall Clock? Size and Hanging Height by Room

How big a wall clock should be over a sofa, console, mantel or open wall, how high to hang it, and how to choose one you can actually read.

Size a wall clock the way you'd size art. If it's the only piece over a sofa, console or mantel, make it about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the furniture below it. Hang it 8 to 10 inches above a sofa back or 6 to 10 inches above a console. On an open wall, center it about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Small clocks, around 10 to 18 inches, belong where you see them up close: a kitchen, a hallway, above a doorway.

Here's how that works out in each spot, and how to pick one you can read.

Size by where it hangs

Where it hangs Size to look for How high
Over a sofa (72–96 in.) as the only piece About 48–72 in. across, or a smaller clock grouped with art Bottom edge 8–10 in. above the sofa back
Over a console or dresser (36–60 in.) About 24–45 in. across Bottom edge 6–10 in. above the top
Over a mantel Two-thirds to three-quarters of the mantel's width 4–8 in. above the mantel
Open wall, no furniture Large enough to fill 60–75% of that wall section on its own, or part of a group that does Center at 57–60 in.
Kitchen, hallway, above a doorway 10–18 in. Where you can read it at a glance

The furniture numbers are the same two-thirds to three-quarters rule our wall art size guide and mirror size guide use. A 36-inch console takes a clock of about 24 to 27 inches. A 60-inch dresser takes about 40 to 45 inches. An 84-inch sofa would need something around 56 to 63 inches, which is a true statement clock. To skip the arithmetic, enter your furniture width in the wall art size calculator: the width it gives works for a clock too.

When the clock is part of a group

Most sofas are wider than most clocks. If yours is 24 or 30 inches over an 84-inch sofa, it will look small on its own. Make it the center of a group instead, with a framed print or two on each side or shelves around it. Then size the whole group, not the clock, to two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa. Our guide to planning a gallery wall covers spacing: keep 2 to 3 inches between pieces so the group reads as one.

How high to hang it

  • Over furniture: measure from the furniture, not the floor. The bottom of the clock sits 8 to 10 inches above a sofa back, 6 to 10 inches above a console or dresser, 4 to 8 inches above a mantel.
  • On an open wall: put the center of the clock about 57 to 60 inches from the floor, roughly eye level and the same height galleries hang art.
  • Kitchen and hallway clocks: a little higher is fine if cabinets or door frames are in the way. What matters is that you can read it from where you stand.

Choose one you can read from where you'll look

A clock is also a tool. Think about how far away you'll be when you check it:

  • From across a living room: bold hands that contrast with the face, and large numerals or clear markers.
  • Skeleton, starburst and decorative clocks are mainly about the look. They read well up close or as a statement piece, but are harder to read from the other side of a room.
  • Bedrooms and home offices: choose a silent (sweep) movement, so the clock doesn't tick. Many listings say "silent" in the name.

Hang it safely

Large metal and wood clocks can be heavy. Check the weight in the listing. Screw into a wall stud where you can, or use an anchor rated well above the clock's weight. A small clock on a single nail is fine; a 40-inch iron clock is not. Most clocks hang from one central hook, so mark the hook position, not the top edge: measure from the top of the clock down to the hanger on the back.

The short version

Size a wall clock like art: about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture or mantel below it, or group a smaller clock with art to reach that width. Hang it 8 to 10 inches above a sofa back, 6 to 10 inches above a console, or with its center at 57 to 60 inches on an open wall. Choose high-contrast hands if you'll read it from across the room, a silent movement for bedrooms, and a stud or rated anchor for heavy clocks. Shop wall clocks.

Frequently asked questions

What size wall clock goes over a couch?

As the only piece, about two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width, which is 48 inches or more for most sofas. A smaller clock works as the center of a group with art on either side, sized together to that width.

Over furniture, 8 to 10 inches above a sofa back or 6 to 10 inches above a console. On an open wall, center it about 57 to 60 inches from the floor.

Is a 24-inch wall clock big?

It's a medium size: right on its own above a console about 32 to 36 inches wide, or as the center of a group above a sofa.

What size clock for a kitchen?

Usually 10 to 18 inches, where you can read it from the counter or the table.

What size clock goes over a fireplace?

Two-thirds to three-quarters of the mantel's width, hung 4 to 8 inches above the mantel.
