Wall Art Size Guide: Over a Sofa, Bed & More
4 min read

How big wall art should be over a sofa, bed, or console, how high to hang it, and when to use one large piece or a set. A simple sizing guide in inches.
Art hung over furniture should span about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width, with its bottom edge 8 to 10 inches above the sofa back or headboard. On an open wall, center the piece — or the whole group — at about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Get those right and almost any artwork looks like it belongs.
Here's how to apply them.
The width rule
The most common mistake is art that's too small for the wall.
- Aim for 2/3 to 3/4 of the furniture width. Over an 84-inch sofa, that's art — or a group of pieces — about 56 to 63 inches wide.
- Measure the whole arrangement when using a set: frames plus the gaps between them.
- On a bare wall with no furniture, fill roughly 60 to 75 percent of the open wall width you want to cover.
| Placement | Furniture width | Art (or group) width | Gap above furniture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over a sofa | 72–96 in. | 48–72 in. | 8–10 in. |
| Over a queen bed | 60–65 in. headboard | 40–48 in. | 8–12 in. above headboard |
| Over a king bed | 76–80 in. headboard | 50–60 in. | 8–12 in. above headboard |
| Over a console or dresser | 36–72 in. | 24–54 in. | 6–10 in. |
| Hallway or open wall | — | 60–75% of the wall section | center at 57–60 in. |
For your own wall, the wall art size calculator turns your furniture or wall width into the art width and hanging height.
How high to hang it
- Over furniture: the furniture sets the height. Leave 8 to 10 inches above a sofa back, and 8 to 12 inches above a headboard, so the art relates to the piece below instead of floating near the ceiling.
- On an open wall: center the art at 57 to 60 inches from the floor — the standard eye-level height galleries use.
- Groups and gallery walls: treat the whole arrangement as one piece and center it at that height.
One large piece or a set?
- One large piece makes a calm, confident statement — ideal over a sofa or bed where you want a single focal point.
- A pair (two pieces side by side) works well over a long sofa or a king bed. Keep 2 to 4 inches between frames so they read as a set.
- A set of three or four in a row or grid adds rhythm. Keep spacing consistent — about 2 to 3 inches — and match frame styles.
- A gallery wall mixes sizes for a collected look. Our gallery wall guide covers layout and hanging step by step.
Over a sofa
The sofa wall is usually the largest in the room, and undersized art is what makes a living room feel unfinished. Go for 2/3 to 3/4 of the sofa width, hang 8 to 10 inches above the back, and let the art's center line up with the sofa's center even if the sofa isn't centered on the wall. More fixes for a room that still feels bare are in why your living room feels unfinished.
Over a bed
Above a bed, art should relate to the headboard, not the ceiling. A single horizontal piece or a pair centered over the bed looks balanced. With a tall headboard, choose a shorter, wider piece so the wall doesn't feel crowded. Our headboard guide covers headboard heights so you can plan both together.
Orientation and shape
- Horizontal art suits wide furniture like sofas, beds, and long consoles.
- Vertical art suits narrow walls, spaces between windows, and hallways.
- Square art is flexible and works well in pairs and grids.

The short version
Make art over furniture about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width, hang it 8 to 10 inches above a sofa back or 8 to 12 inches above a headboard, and center art on open walls at 57 to 60 inches. Measure sets as one piece, keep gaps consistent, and choose horizontal art for wide furniture and vertical art for narrow walls.

Frequently asked questions
What size art should go over a sofa?
About two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width. For an 84-inch sofa, look for art or a group about 56 to 63 inches wide.
How high should art be hung above a sofa?
About 8 to 10 inches above the top of the sofa back.
How high should wall art be hung on an empty wall?
Center it about 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
What size art goes above a queen bed?
About 40 to 48 inches wide, hung 8 to 12 inches above the headboard.

How far apart should frames be in a set?
About 2 to 3 inches for a tight set or grid, and 2 to 4 inches for a pair.
