Are Washable Rugs Worth It? What They're Good At, Sizes, and How to Wash Them
5 min read

What makes a rug washable, where washable rugs shine and fall short, which sizes fit a home washer, and how to wash one without damaging it.
Washable rugs are worth it when spills, pets, kids or heavy foot traffic would ruin a regular rug — and when the rug is a size you can actually wash. They trade plushness for practicality: most are thin, flat-woven synthetic rugs with a non-slip backing, which is what makes them easy to clean and also why they feel firmer underfoot than a pile rug.
Here's what they're good at, where they fall short, and what fits in a washing machine.
What makes a rug washable
A rug can go in a washer only if it's thin, flexible and light enough to tumble, and made of a fiber that won't shrink or felt. In practice that means a flat, machine-woven synthetic.
The washable rugs we carry are typical of the type: heavy-duty polyester, stain resistant and UV resistant, about 3/16 inch thick, with a felt non-slip backing, and marked machine washable. Because they're made for indoor and outdoor use, the same rug works in a kitchen or on a porch.
Where washable rugs shine
- Under a dining table. Spills land on the rug, and a flat weave lets chairs slide instead of catching.
- Entries, halls and kitchens. These take the most dirt and the most drips.
- Homes with pets or young kids. Accidents are a wash cycle instead of a ruined rug.
- Porches and patios. An indoor-outdoor washable rug handles damp and sun.
- Rentals and kids' rooms, where you want color and pattern without worrying about every mark.
Where they fall short
- They're not plush. A thin flat weave has little cushion. If softness underfoot matters most, a thicker pile rug — or a thin rug pad under a washable one — is the better choice.
- Big sizes are hard to wash at home. See the next section.
- Synthetic isn't wool. Wool is more resilient and hides wear better over the years; polyester wins on stain resistance and price. Our wool vs. jute vs. synthetic comparison goes through the trade-offs.
Will it fit in my washer?
Size, not material, is the usual limit.
| Rug size | Washing machine |
|---|---|
| 3×5 and smaller | Fits most home washers |
| 5×8 | Usually needs a large-capacity machine |
| 8×10 and larger | Usually too big for a home washer; use a large commercial machine or spot clean |
Check your washer's capacity and the rug's weight before buying a larger size; a 5×8 washable rug we carry weighs about 12 pounds. For rugs too big to wash, regular vacuuming and spot cleaning keep them in shape, and indoor-outdoor rugs can be rinsed with a hose outside.
How to wash a washable rug
Follow the care label first. Unless it says otherwise, these steps suit most washable rugs:
- Shake it out or vacuum it to remove grit.
- Wash on a cold, gentle cycle with a mild detergent and no bleach.
- Air dry it flat or over a rail; high heat in a dryer can damage a backing.
- Make sure it's fully dry before putting it back down, especially on a wood floor.

Sizing still matters
A washable rug follows the same size rules as any other rug. Use the rug size calculator for a living room, bedroom or dining table, or read the full rug size guide.

The short version
Washable rugs are thin, flat-woven synthetics built for easy cleaning: ideal under dining tables, in entries and kitchens, and in homes with pets and kids, less so where you want plush softness. Sizes up to 3×5 fit most home washers; 5×8 usually needs a large-capacity machine, and 8×10 or larger a commercial one. Wash cold and gentle, air dry, and size it like any rug. Frequently asked questions
Are washable rugs worth it?
Yes, if spills, pets, kids or traffic would wear out a regular rug, and if the size fits a washer you can use. They're thinner and less plush than pile rugs.
Can an 8x10 washable rug go in a washing machine?
Usually not a home machine. Rugs that size generally need a large commercial washer; otherwise vacuum and spot clean, or hose down an indoor-outdoor rug outside.
Do washable rugs need a rug pad?
One with a non-slip backing stays put without a pad. Add a thin pad if you want more cushion underfoot.
Can washable rugs go outside?
The ones made for indoor and outdoor use can. Let them dry fully before rolling them up or bringing them in.
Are washable rugs good for pets?
They're a practical choice: accidents and muddy paws come out in the wash, and a flat weave doesn't trap as much hair as a deep pile.
